Unit 1: Skills for Learning (September-October)

CASEL Core Competencies: Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Relationship Skills

Lesson 1: The Role of the School Counselor and School Success Students will review the role of the school counselor and discuss student mindsets and behaviors for school success.

Lesson 2: Building Community – Safe, Kind, & Focused Students will define include, exclude, and inclusive. They will understand inclusive thoughts and behaviors, and show empathy and compassion by identifying ways to include others.

  • Self-Awareness: Developing Interests and a Sense of Purpose

Bullying Prevention: Recognizing, Refusing & Reporting Bullying Clarifying what bullying is and how it is both harmful and against the rules empowers students to avoid bullying others and to respond appropriately if they witness or experience bullying. This stops bullying from being accepted as normal. It also helps bullied students understand that bullying is wrong, and they don’t deserve to be bullied, which can reduce the emotional harm they suffer. Oct

it is important for students to understand that safe touches are positive, caring touches that enrich our lives, and also what an unsafe touch is, so they can recognize unsafe situations. Unsafe touches are touches that hurt our bodies. This concept is particularly important in teaching students not to participate in unsafe touching with other students.
